December 2013

Treats from Samichlaus
Thought I should write about last December before it turns into March 2014. This December wasn't quite as exciting as past Decembers here. I'm not sure if the novelty wore off or we were too busy doing other things. We just didn't get out and enjoy the traditions that we've grown to love about being here this time of the year.  We went to one local Christmas market but we didn't even see the camel in town this year.  Erik was working quite a bit, even travelled for part of the month and if I remember correctly the weather wasn't all that cooperative.  I was feeling a bit homesick this year, more so than normal and was looking forward to getting back to sunny Florida.

Christmas booty
We did see Samichlaus on December 6th, that is the traditional day the Swiss children celebrate Santa Claus.  This year he came in on a big steam engine, bringing little bags of nuts and chocolate for all the kids.  We celebrated the end of the year with our traditional holiday party at the English speaking playgroup.  And said goodbye to all our expat friends who head back to their mother country this time of year. We had a quite a bit of snow from late November to mid-December that stuck around for a while right up until a week or so before Christmas.  Erik and I enjoyed a fun date night in Zurich sans children and we had some nice meals with friends before we left.

Cutie pies
On Christmas Eve we went to the Zurich Zoo which has become a bit of a Christmas tradition for us.  And Christmas day was fun watching the kids open presents.  Even Miles was into ripping open the presents this year.  The weather was less than ideal so we didn't get out for our Christmas day hike.  And Erik had high hopes of sledding but unfortunately it was just too rainy and the snow had melted a week or so before Christmas.
